I certainly gave myself a challenge when I decided to try and make a cake that looked like a towel. If you haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy then you may find this idea a little strange, but trust me, it all makes sense! Most importantly the recipient loved it.
How did you achieve the texture of the towel? Did you use fondant or royal icing? I'm invited to a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy party and volunteered to make the cake. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Krystan, thank you for your comment.
DeleteTo get the towel texture I used a white chocolate buttercream as the base, with finely grated white chocolate on the top....yes it's as simple as that! I did some experimenting beforehand trying other ideas such as dessicated coconut and also sprinkles. Both of these worked well, but with the cake itself being chocolate I thought the chocolate would be the best option.
I hope this helps and wish you all the best in making your cake!
Best cake ever
ReplyDeleteGenius!
Hi! I would like to try making this, but I wonder how you did the "folded" look to the towel? I mean the way it appears to be folded on itself. It looks very nice !
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteThanks for your comment. The cake is made of several sheet cakes stacked on top of each other, so it was just a case of accentuating the edges. I rounded them off and carved into the sides a little, then used buttercream to create the folded edges at each end of the cake. I hope this makes sense, it sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is.
beautiful cake and so creative!
ReplyDeleteI want to make this for my husbands 42 Birthday on July 30th. I was wondering is the guide book on top made of fondant?
ReplyDeleteHi Royal Ruskies
DeleteThank you for the comment. The book is a large chocolate sugar cookie covered in fondant. I wanted to add a bit more interest to it instead of it all being a lump of icing, but if you don't have the time to bake the cookie as well, maybe use a small cake board to give the book its depth (may also serve as a keepsake for your husbands birthday!). I hope this helps and I wish you luck....would be nice to see how it turns out!
